The professional team at Cedar Ridge Animal Hospital is happy to answer any questions you may have with your breeding canines. There is a lot of planning involved in having a healthy litter and we offer many tools to help with your success.

Estrus Evaluation

Vaginal cytology and progesterone testing are available to determine the best days to breed for optimal fertility. The cytology is done in-house and the progesterone is sent to Express Labs for same day results.

Artificial Insemination

Our team is experienced in artificial insemination for those dogs which are unable to reproduce naturally. We offer vaginal cytology to determine where your female is in her heat cycle. For more accurate results, we can send off a progesterone blood test to the lab for same day results.

X-Rays (Digital)

Radiographic diagnosis of pregnancy is first possible 42 to 50 days after first mating. It is usually recommended to wait until later in the pregnancy to obtain a puppy count with radiographs as it can be difficult to visualize all the puppies in early films. For the most accurate puppy numbers, radiographs should be taken at about day 55 post first breeding.

C-Sections

Cesarean sections are sometimes necessary to safely delivery the puppies. Mothers are on an IV catheter and heart monitor during surgery. Our team is trained to revive puppies and get them prepared to send home with their mother.

Litter Exam

First puppy exams include the following for each puppy at 8 weeks:

• Full physical exam (Heart, lungs, ears, eyes, teeth etc.)
• DA2PP / Corona vaccination
• Pyrantel dewormer
• Health record and second dose of dewormer
• Optional: Microchip and fecal float for additional charge
